Aus Eco Solutions recently attended a meeting of the Pimelia spinescens Recovery Team Meeting. Pimelia spinescens subsp.
Spinescens, better known as the Spiny Rice Flower, is a critically endangered grassland herb, found in several sites we manage. It’s always helpful to know more about the species we protect, especially when they are at risk of extinction.
We heard from a number of interested parties, including members of the recovery team, ecologists, DELWP, and the CFA as well as representatives from various councils. We heard about current efforts to help protect and recover this critically endangered species, learning a lot of interesting information. We also visited an area where Spiny Rice Flowers are being grown from seed by one of the recovery team’s members, Debbie Reynolds. Debbie is experimenting with different growing conditions and disturbance patterns, trying to learn exactly what conditions suit the species best. She is trialing grassland, herb field and orchard locations, with burning, mowing and no disturbance, in order to better inform management actions involving Spiny Rice Flowers.
Aus Eco Solutions is responsible for sites containing a significant number of Spiny Rice Flowers, on sites in Altona, Deer Park and Eynesbury. It was certainly helpful to spend a day with the experts, picking up little tips that will help us in future to do our part for the conservation of this critically endangered plant.
